most twitterers are still mostly tech geeks and half of Japan, but there are a ton of people who just tell all their followers when they're at Walmart or on trips or whatever.. there are a lot of "tech celebs" and minor celebs on there, and often someone sets up to tweet from big events, backstage at awards shows, etc.. someone was updating the writers strike when that was going, for instance
this is a handy page to find news/announcement type twitterers you might want to sign up for if you're on twitter, for breaking news, special interests, etc.. a lot of local news outlets are getting in on twitter now too
http://twitter.pbwiki.com/News-Services
you can also shop the Twitter site like Myspace for interesting twitterers: one person's followers/followees lead to more, lead to more, lead to more
if you've completed an account at twitter.com - not just signed up for my or someone else's alerts from your phone - you can set alerts to come to your phone or not, via IM, or just read them online, set block times so you don't get woken up at 4am cuz someone is twittering that they're going to bed, etc
it's just an awesome service, and it's free and ad-free for now - it's funded by venture capital and its founders will probably be gazillionaires before long
i think i was the first to use it for BB feeds alerts - it's ideal for us :)
a few other sites have picked up on it now
